Peter N. Gray

People think that art fits solely in culture, and that science is not culture. I’m interested in science generated as a cultural necessity. Innovations in technology require a thoughtful response from artists who are awake to their own time. I use the hard malleable metals steel and bronze to awaken our inner scientist as I express the inherent softer organic sculptural aesthetics of biological systems. I am inspired by the aesthetics of genetics and microbiology often using them in sculpture to bring artistic aspects of science into the realm of each person. Several of my works pair geometric patterns with organic shapes demonstrating entrapment and escape. My residency in Marseille, France and extensive travels in Asia bring additional influences to the artistic aspects of science. Current works depict aspects of knowledge quest, genographic migration, genetic structure, and/or antibody action. I was an Illinois Road Scholar with solo and group sculpture exhibitions in Chicago, IL, New York City, NY, Hoboken, NJ, Liberal, KS, South Haven, MI and San Francisco, CA. Large-scale public sculptures are in permanent collections of Sculpture Parks and a Chicago public school and I have had temporary (annual) placement on the Chicago campus of DePaul University and the Johnson, Vermont Sculpture Park.
