Mark Saxe has been a sculptor working mainly with stone for 35 years. He was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts and as a young man served in the army in Vietnam. Upon his release from the army, he completed art school on the GI Bill before becoming a stonemason's apprentice in 1975.

He has lived and worked in New Mexico for 30 years, and owns Southwest Stoneworks, supplying stone and tools to professionals in the northern New Mexico region.  Saxe is the founder and director of Sax Stonecarving Workshops, which presents a series of 7-day intensive summer sessions taught by the best instructors in the field, since 2001.

Saxe's sculptural forms reflect his concern with the universal forces that bind us together and keep us apart. He draws upon his years of experience as a quarrier, fabricator, letterer, and carver to give his work a spontaneous and fluid quality only achievable by one who has developed a long respectful relationship with his medium. In numerous private collections, his work is influenced by Noguchi, Chillida, and William Edmondson.

His work is currently represented at Rift Gallery in Rinconada, NM, and at LewAllen Contemporary in Santa Fe, NM.
