The first time I saw an African nkisi; it pulled me in.  I wanted to understand.  I know that it represents a powerful force that binds promises between parties and we are not privilege to the content of those agreements. True promises can bring both pain and joy.  I identify with these pieces because they are visual symbols of life’s journey.

My forms are a compilation of African nkisi, ancient goddesses, and reliquaries that result in a response to an intuitive materialization and synthesis of personal circumstances. My personal iconography has been collected over a lifetime.  It doesn’t matter that you don’t understand the specifics if you feel my attempt to preserve a tangible part of me.  They are spiritual and emotional.

I sometimes decide to use songs as a starting “place”.  Universal on one level – a song can evoke memories and emotions of a specific period or event.  I am a collector and my studio is filled with objects that I have picked up….sometimes they are my inspiration.  Finally, I am inspired by a driving personal need to create visually.  I have always been an artist.

My hope is that you understand our need for visual communication is as strong as those that are oral and written.
