I was born in 1946 in upstate New York, grew up in New York City, and received my art training in the late 1960s at Antioch College and the New York Studio School. I am particularly indebted to the Studio School for providing a vibrant creative environment in the context of a firm grounding in artistic tradition. In 1988 I moved to Halifax, where I later studied ceramics at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. Over the years I have worked in various media, focusing on ceramic sculpture since 2008. I find the wide range of expressive possibilities of clay – in form, surface and color – make it a powerful medium in my quest for the elusive beauty that embraces awkwardness, the harmony within dissonance, a spacious visceral energy. An important influence on my work has been the practice of Buddhist meditation, which has been part of my life since 1972 under the guidance of the late Tibetan master and dharma warrior, Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche. This influence is primarily indirect, more in process rather than content. It helps me to get out of the way so that the pieces can make themselves; I find that inspiration arises when the conceptual framework is short-circuited. As Leonard Cohen said, “poetry comes from a place that no one commands, that no one conquers.”
