BIO

Rosalyn Driscoll’s early work in painting and drawing focused on the human body, merging visible surfaces and underlying anatomical structures. She then turned to hand-papermaking to create abstract collages, drawing her imagery from the internal experience of her body.
Interest in the body led to making sculptures that explored touch as a way of knowing and engaging viewers’ bodies. These tactile sculptures were designed for people with visual disabilities, but she found that touching enriches the aesthetic experience for everyone.
Her sculptures and installation are no longer explicitly tactile, but they continue to draw from and speak to the inner somatic senses, evoking bodily feelings such as balance, pressure, motion and emotion.
Since discovering rawhide during a residency in New Mexico, it has become her signature material. She makes use of its amber, mottled, scarred surfaces that expose the life of the cow, as well as its malleability, translucence and evocation of life, death and transformation. She sometimes incorporates neon and light into the work, and collaborates with filmmakers to integrate moving images into the structure and meaning, enriching and transforming both matter and image. 
Engaging the body through her tactile sculptures led to her new work that includes viewers' bodies in the artwork itself, and to collaborating with a dancer, integrating her materials and sculptures into his choreography.
She is a member of Sensory Sites, an international collective based in London that creates installations investigating sensory perception. Her work has received awards and fellowships from New England Foundation for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council (twice), and residencies at Dartington Hall Trust, UK, and Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico.
