Orly Ruaimi was born in Israel and currently lives and works in San Francisco, California. Orly attained a BS degree in finance in 2007 from George Mason University Fairfax Virginia, allowing her to work for the government contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. In 2010, Ruaimi entered Jewelry & Metal Arts Graduate Program at the Academy of Art University where her work was awarded the Lady Gaga International Design Competition and the Spring Jewelry Design Award. In 2016, she began the MFA program San Francisco Art Institute where her work was recognized with the prestigious Murphy and Cadogan Scholarship in 2016 after being selected that same year as the 1st AIR at TechShop SF resulting in her solo exhibition “Fearless”. In 2017, She was nominated for the to Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award and also awarded the Harold E. Weiner Memorial Fund Award in Sculpture. In addition to being nominated for the Headlands Graduate Fellow Program, her most current achievements include a site specific installation entitled “I’ll Fight You Just to Get Peace” in conjunction with the Mel Ziegler exhibition “A Living Thing” at the Walter McBean Gallery, the selection of her video “Risk Management” for the MFA Film Festival at the New People Cinema, San Francisco and as an installation to be shown in 2018 at Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts.

Following her graduation from San Francisco Art Institute with an MFA in sculpture in May 2017, Ruaimi was one of the inaugural artists in residence at Otis College of Art and Design in June, MASS MoCA in September followed by a visiting Artist and Scholar Residency at New Mexico State University in October. Her work has also been exhibited at the de Young Museum, Richmond Art Center, Diego Rivera Gallery, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Cannery Gallery 108 & 112, LA Artcore Brewery Annex Gallery, and Facebook HeadQuarters.

My work deals with the conflicted, schizoid experience of embodied gender as it relates to an unending war. I have been that soldier. I have carried those weapons with me, across my body, waist and shoulders, slowly and deceptively accumulating trauma amidst the mundane acts of daily life. Within these contexts, those sick toys dissolve into mere accessories, prosthetics and attachments. Missing body parts and their replacements become analogies for an unbalance of our human existence. My work questions where the politics of war separate themselves from their psychological effects on the individual and in turn society.

By exploring ideas of protection and potential harm, I challenge these dualities in the form of steel prosthetic shields and daggers that simultaneously not shield and harm the body. Using steel, concrete and fabric, I attempt to demonstrates the idea of containment on both physical and mental levels. Merging these works in various forms such as installation, performance, photography and new media, my work speaks to the yearning and struggle for emotion and physical freedom for the individual from societal, institutional and political burdens. It attempts to transfer the psychological tension one experiences in constant conflict. My intention is to invite the viewer to question their mental safety in their own current context.
