Artist Statement

I have many genetic complications that effect my life. I see my body as a fragile vessel that I cannot be liberated from by any scientific or medical means. Due to these factors I am often drawn to creating artworks that highlight the unseen anomalies of my body as well as reflecting on undiscovered or future complications associated with my daily medication. Majority of my artwork reflects a physiological sense of stress, fragility, anxiety, and vulnerability that I have often felt as a response to my persistent anatomical circumstances.

The patterns used in my work draw from scanned electron microscope (SEM) images of bone cells and the human intestinal track. The SEM imagery of the spinal column creates an emphasis on the organic qualities of the material and through a subtractive method, the materials become porous. The Intestinal track uses an additive process and allows for the use of found objects, conflicting materials, and extreme use of color.

The artwork is an abstract representation of the body but does not directly reference one particular body even though it is a reflection of my experience. In this the artwork is freed from social constraints associated with it and becomes nonexclusive. A bone cell is a bone cell and an intestine is an intestine. It has no gender, race, sexuality, political stance, or nation. Its only concern is functionality as a means of survival.
