Statement

My artistic practice revolves around the intersection of painting and sculpture and I am particularly interested in the tension between illusory and real space. To this end I create multimedia abstract paintings, sculptures and installations. While the paintings I make use colour and shape to play with spatial illusions, the sculptures relate to painting, but deal with real space through material, form, and a conscious attention to the specific spaces and rooms they inhabit. Operating in the space between the picture plane of a painting and the dimensional reality of a sculpture, my work often inhabits both mediums at once.

Sharing the same visual rhetoric, my sculptures inform my paintings through material (and vice versa). The materials I use are often familiar found scraps of dimensional lumber, discarded sheets of plastic, tarpaulin, textiles, and cans of mistinted house paint. Inspiration for my forms comes from a wide array of information, ranging from construction sites, to picture frames, domestic furniture, and even DIY style backyard treehouses. In many of my works, geometric forms are juxtaposed with hectic assemblages of wood and soft material, creating dynamic compositions with a charismatic configuration or visual balance.
